Don't know if you've seen this already, but I posted it on my boards.. Some Battlegrounds info !
How Battlefields Work:
Members of opposite factions are slotted into different instances based on their current level. So depending on who participates, there could be several instanced Battlefields up at the same time. An example was given where, and I'm just pulling these numbers from thin air here, that level 1-9 players would be one "tier". And level 10-19 players would be another "tier". Players will be automatically sorted by which tier they are in, into different instanced battlefield areas. This keeps PvP fair - you will never see a level 40 slaughtering through a bunch of level 5's!
Objectives:
Where Battlefields really start to get interesting, is when Blizzard throws Objectives into the mix. Instead of two sides fighting for no apparent reason, like in many previous MMORPG's, instanced areas usually have one or more key objectives which the two opposing sides are fighting over.
For example, in one Battlefield, both sides may be fighting over a chokepoint like a massive bridge - take and hold the position long enough, and you'll win the battle. Yet in another area, both sides have bases where NPC's spawn. You can fight alongside these NPC's and lead them to assault the enemy base - destroy the enemy base to win.
Fight Alongside NPC's:
As I alluded to, you will be able to fight alongside NPC's while within instanced Battlefield areas. In some Battlefields, NPC's will periodically spawn at your base and move to engage the enemy - other times, entire betallions may already be in formation. Players will likely not be able to give orders to NPC's.
Your Actions Have Meaning!:
The results of these events are tallied and can result in dramatic changes back in the non-instanced world. For example, if you were fighting in an instanced area made out to be a sea battle near Booty Bay, and your side won, the entire town of Booty Bay may change - NPC's would only serve your faction, and the town guards would also defend the town in your name. New quests would appear for your faction in the town - not to mention the opposing faction won't be able to take the air taxi there anymore. Of course, how long this would last for depends only on when Blizzard decides to reopen the area and allow both factions to - once again, duke it out! Note that major cities like Stormwind will probably not be able to be conquered - but who knows, perhaps Blizzard will one day stage that, as it is certainly possible.
Seiges:
The ultimate incarnation of Battlefield PvP is an all out siege! One faction plays the defenders and the other plays the attackers. Untold numbers of players - and NPC's - will clash in a battle that would shake the very foundations of the world!
Here is an interesting quote about sieges:
A completely special incentive for participating in planned events is the prospect of recieving truly unique items. These events can be invasions by the undead or the siege of a city - with catapults, steam tanks and everything about seiges that we love. Blizzard has the power after such large battles to hand out to particularly deserving players rewards which are absolutely unique in the entire world.
