Offshore Sabine Pass 10/5/03
After a spell of rough seas, My Dad (Ron), My Brother (Casey) and Myself, finally got to get offshore. Got to the boat ramp with still water and no ripples at all. Too good to be true?? No!!. We found the jettys to be equally flat and beyond the jettys, even better. Seas were slick. I have never seen it like this before although the color was off and we never hit any sign of blue water. We headed out about 35 miles in these conditions and got a few pictures along the way. At 35 miles we were still only in clean green water.
We got to our rig to find someone already on it. Moved out a little ways and started catching small snapper on another rig. All snapper were small, we caught a few keepers, but they were borderline and ended up keeping only one snapper which was caught by Casey. We decided to try trolling for a king or two and Bam a rod with a rattle jet starts screaming. I knew we had a king on, but then it came up for some acrobatics... It was a dolphin!! My first to ever see in person, and certainly the first to catch.. It ripped off drag like there was no tomorrow. There must have been 10 to 15 good jumps and I was scared he was going to shake the hook, but we finally got the gaff in him. He measured at 33.5 inches, probably about 8 lbs or so.
We continued trolling in the off colored water with no results and started heading in. We hit the short rigs for a while, my dad got a nice size gafftop, and that about covers it there. Stopped at the jettys for a few minutes and headed in. Not a meat haul, but our first Dolphin and excellent seas. Unbelievable trip.
