Offshore Sabine 6-28-03
Finally found the sea conditions good enough to test out the offshore boat. Broke jettys and headed out about 34 miles. Boat ran great on the way out, no problems. Hit a rig and found a large ling that wanted nothing to do with what we had to offer, man he was a big boy too, it was frustrating seeing him just cruising around the boat. Decided that he wasn't going to bits so we started snapper fishing. Lots of undersized snapper, and the Sharks were extremely thick. Decided to move to another rig. Got to this rig and right off the bat, caught 2 keeper snapper. Thought this was going to be a great day, but the bite slowed. The snapper bite that is. Sharks moved in and Spadefish and Triggerfish made it hard to get your bait down to the snaps. Hit another rig with the same conditions, shark, triggers, and spades, but caught 3 more keeper snapper, and a good size spanish mac. Reds were also fairly thick at this rig, caught several slot size and bulls, but there is no legal red in Federal waters, so they were all released to fight another day. Decided to start heading in while the going was good, still no boat problems. Heading in, we seen a few schools of hardtails, and although we weren't after kings, we decided to troll through one of them. We had a king come about 5 or 6 ft out of the water and nail a rattle jet and I guess he hit the mono, because he broke us off quick. Trolled another trip through and produced nothing. Back to the jettys we headed. Still no boat problems. Made it to the jettys, then to the boat ramp, then onto the trailer. We had finished the day with absolutely no boat problems. Weather was great, water was great, everything was great. Came home, skinned fish, showered and ate fresh snapper for supper, what more could you ask for??
