Sabine Offshore Report 5-28-03
Ok, here we go with the report to the best of my memory. Im really tired now. We (myself, clint and Jeff), left home at 4:00 and between getting feul. food etc, we were at the Sabine Pass boat ramp at about 6:00. We got the boat in the water, loaded up and were excited because we saw the sea forcast for the day was 2 ft.. Well, we get to the jettys, which we were surprised to see was a little rough. I was going to get a picture of their 2 foot seas, but MY BATTERIES IN MY CAMERA WERE DEAD.. All day and no camera, so I have only a few pics of when I got home, not even the whole bag, but its the best I could do. We tried for some live bait for a little while and gave up, no bait at the jettys, so we figured we'd get some hardtails on the way out. We get to the end of the jettys before we realize the gulf had not seen 2 foot seas at all this morning. So, we head on out in the 3 to 4 footers that were there with an ocasional 5 in the mix.. Beautiful, the day is starting bad. We were heading about 45 miles out, but it was rough. We stopped about 20 miles out to fish a rig and see if the seas calmed. We were there a few minutes when we started catching some juvenile snapper.. All throwbacks.. Tired of the little ones I rig up for a something bigger and BAM, oh yeah, fish on.. Its got a lot of fight in him, Im thinking I may have a jack on, but nope. The line starts coming up due to the fish surfacing, I knew it was a shark.. Large Blacktip, cut off at the hook when to the boat, no measurement made.. We caught a few more sharks and decided to ease on out a little more. Well we got to this rig and the same senario, small snapper and shark everywhere. We played for a little while and moved out a little farther. We decided to try something else. Clint was using a diamond jig and me and Jeff decided we were going to see what a spoon would do.. We rigged up on piano wire leaders and threw out. First cast of Jeffs is a hook up, something with a fight. I cast a few more times while he's fighting his fish still and Im hooked up.. Clint, at the front with the diamond jig hollers that hes hooked up too.. A tripple. Jeff gets his to the boat and it ends up being a small bull red about 32 inches.. Mine and Clints were small bull reds too.. Every two ar three casts were the same thing, red, red, red.. We got tired of that since we probably caught about 25 together and we move once more, a little more out.. Same senario, bull reds and shark here, but with the acception of Jeffs king from a spoon on light tackle.. Nice.. We didn't stay long and we dicided to start heading home and try for a limit of kings on the way in. We rigged up for trolling and went to c rig a little closer in had a few pick ups, but none serious.. Left for another rig, by this time the water was finally smoothing out, we were in some 2 to 3's now.. Much better. We got to the rig and started a troll with four rods. First pass, fish on, king. Second pass, fish on, king.. Third pass, my reel goes screaming, I get him on, Jeffs reel goes screaming before we can get it out of the way, jeff gets his on, Clints reel goes off.. We got a tripple here people, wow. Then BAM, the other reel goes screaming too... As luck would have it, clints fish pulled free, but tore his daisy chain all to he77. Ha grabbed the other screamer.. Boated a king for Jeff, a king for Clint, and a bonita for me.. All in one pass.. Awesome, nothing more to describe it.. So, we got almost a limit of kings, we need one more.. We have 5 kings in the boat and we decide we are running low on feul so we need to head on in.. Great day on the water from about 2:00 on, since the weather people evidently was playing a trick on us.. Ended up catching 5 kingfish, a dozen and a half or so sharks, about 25 small bull reds, 1 bonita, a few triggerfish, spadefish, and about 40 small snapper. Never pulled one keeper snap up. In the cooler: 5 kingfish,1 bonita and 1 triggerfish.. Nice boatride home.. I have a few pictures of when I got to my house, just mine and jeffs kings and my bonita.. Sorry for lack of pictures, this would have been the day to have batteries too.. Lots of fish caught today..
Bait for the surf this weekend.
