SPI REPORT 4-26-02 - 4-28-02
Left out at around 5:00am along with Shark, Erica (Sharks better half), Bruce, and Jeff and got to the Jetties at about 2:30pm on Friday. Met Deaver who was already there with lines out. Set up Camp and started to catch bait. Lots of mullet on the jettys. Baited up and kicked back for a little rest. About midnight, finally a little action. Not fishing action though. We had to go up the beach and lend a hand to some fellow Surfmasters members who had fallen prey to the sand. There I got to meet Hardcore and Yakmon. Came back to camp and decided to get a little shut eye. I awoke the next morning to a lot of people who had shown up in the morning hours. I got to meet Frank, Jazz, Felix, Bull Whiting Bob, and Pompano Jim. The water was nice, I thought for sure we'd have a few runs. Erica was lucky enough to catch a few small fish and a bonnethead shark. I slept too late to get pictures of it though. Sorry.
A little later, a few more trucks come up to camp and stop. It happened to be Whopper, Gonzofish, and Craig. We sat around and shot the breeze for a few minutes and they headed to the surf for a while. We saw a little commotion around the end of the jettys and it turned out to be a bull red caught by Bull Whiting Bob, This, I think was his first Bull Red. Congratulations man. A little while later, Bull Whiting Bob also caught a Moray eel of all things. My first moray to ever see. The jettys toward the end of the day had some serious rigs out, and plenty of them too.
We bait the lines out before dark and settle in for a little campfire conversation. Whopper, Gonzo, and Craig reported catching some bull whiting in the surf. Gonzofish cooked up some chili-cornbread. My first time to eat this, but it was great. Thanks a lot Gonzo. It started getting a little late so I decided that the tent was calling me. The next morning, we woke up and started packing. As we were packing we saw a tarpon roll, Gonzo and whopper set out a couple of slidelines with live piggy perch. Not long after, Gonzo's reel is screaming. The fight is on. After a while of fighting, the fish gets tangled in the rocks. WE ARE NOT HAVING THIS, is evidently what sHArK was thinking, due to him grabbing his yak and heading out to the line. He freed it and the battle was on again. Then it was hung on the rocks again, shark fixed the problem again and he was pulling drag for a 3rd time. As we thought it was whipped, the line broke. We never got to see it. Heres Gonzo with the Hook up and Shark in the yak after freeing the line.
After the excitement, We talked for a few minutes and Gonzo began showing us how to do the slideline. Nice info for any fisherman. Ill be using them a lot now. Then we saw a bent rod that belonget to Frank. We got to the action and he was bringing in a good size ray. It was nice to see something get landed. I snapped a shot while Felix was bringing him to the cooler. Nice chunk of bait there.
Not a whole lot of action this weekend, but couldn't have had a better time. As for me, Im ready for the next one. The fish better watch out, we're warmed up now.
