The big hole is where the heater box goes.  I'm sure you know what the brown stuff is.  The top right pic and the bottom one are of the main support on top of the firewall.  It had several holes big enough to fit my fist in.  You may not notice but in the first pic the whole firewall was rusted away from the door post almost all the way from the bottom to the top.
